Spring into reading!
Hard to believe with the icy weather this week, but the Spring Term has begun and students are off and running on their reading and AR quizzing. The AR board in the library has had a springtime makeover and is already decorated with stars. Students who score 100% on an AR quiz will get a star on the board. Silver stars are awarded to readers who score 100% on five quizzes, and gold stars to those who score 100% on ten. All the stars go into a prize drawer at the end of term. Two students have already earned gold stars this term, and seven have been awarded silver stars:
Silver
7A Ella Neal
7E Lilia Prowse, Sam Flury, Hannah Robinson
7L Seth Baskerville, Eliz Gokalp Kingsford
8S Daisy Porter
Gold
7A Nic Berman
7N Elliot Coates
All students who score 60% or above on a quiz earn points towards their form's total. Remember, there is a prize for the two forms finishing at the top of their league table at the end of term! Here are the current standings:

Sarah Crossan - by invitation only

The library team is very excited to announce that award-winning young adult (YA) fiction writer Sarah Crossan will return to Beaumont on Thursday 2nd March as part of our celebrations for World Book Day 2017. Sarah is the author of Apple and Rain, our whole school read in 2015. Students will remember when Sarah visited the school last year and gave an incredibly entertaining and inspiring talk on her love of books and the power of poetry.

In October 2016, Sarah received the prestigious Carnegie Medal book award for her verse-novel One. The Carnegie judging panel said the book is "deeply moving, beautifully observed, unusual but perfectly crafted – the sort of book that will stay with the reader long after the final page.”
Sarah's visit will take place after lunch in the hall. In order to tie the visit into our current whole school read, this event will only be open to students who have read and reviewed Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. If you would like to meet Sarah, there is still time to read the book and get your name onto the guest list!
We have lots of copies of Counting by 7s in the library, plus all Sarah Crossan's YA titles.
Last chance to win a Kindle Fire!
Friday 10th February marks the deadline for our main Beaumont Reads (whole school read) competition. To take part, students must create and submit their own, short book trailer inspired by Counting by 7s. All entries will be judged by Mrs Hosegood and the creator of the winning book trailer will receive a fantastic Kindle Fire. Advice on how to make a book trailer, plus everything you need to know about this competition can be found on our earlier blog:
Year 7 students tell us what they love about their book club.
'Book club is a perfect way to
relax on Monday lunchtime, talking about books (and eating biscuits). Miss
Mayer Khan runs it and you can guarantee it will be really fun each week. Book
club also allows you to go on computers that the rest of the school are not
allowed to go on, and there are some opportunities when you can get a free
book. You get so many options of what to do each week. You can meet authors,
read books, do quizzes and have Christmas parties.' Lilia
Prowse 7E
'If you love books then this is
the place for you. Things that book club do include reading a book together,
watching a film, and we have already met Tamsyn Murray for an exclusive
interview. So, in summary, book club is fun and you get to do lots of cool
stuff. I like it because I love reading.' Ella
