Enjoying a 'free holiday' in Nepal during a visit from writer Jane Wilson-Howarth

Year 7 students and staff were treated to a journey to the foothills of the Himalayas this week during a visit from writer Jane Wilson-Howarth. Jane lived in Nepal for six years and has used her experiences there as the inspiration for her gripping young adult adventure novel Himalayan Kidnap. Jane told students that, being dyslexic, she didn't enjoy writing when she was at school. It was only when she moved to Nepal that she was inspired to start writing books because she found it such a fascinating place.

When reading her book, Jane wants her readers to imagine themselves in Nepal where, she explains, adventures are to be had wherever you go. Listening to her read extracts from Himalayan Kidnap, our students were transported to Nepal by the vivid descriptions of the exotic jungle wildlife and the rich sights, sounds and smells of the country.

As a zoologist and travel writer, Jane is keen for her readers to learn more about Nepali wildlife, culture and about the planet as a whole. Here are a few of the things we learned during Jane's visit:

You don't want to meet a yak on a narrow Himalayan path, they have been known to push people off mountains!

In Nepal, it is rude to point with your finger. Nepalis point by pouting their lips.

Mugger crocodiles can grow up to three metres long. Don't swim in their ponds, it's not good for your health!

Although Nepal is often referred to as 'the only Hindu kingdom of the world', other religions, including Buddhism, are represented here. People of different religions are very tolerant of each other in Nepal.

A big thank you to Jane for sharing so many of her adventures with us. Here are what our Year 7 students had to say:

I think the author was amazing. The best bits were when she read extracts from Himalayan Kidnap. Listening to her life in Nepal was fascinating. Alex H.

I liked it because the author had lots of detail in everything she said. I also think she likes travelling like I do! Lucia L-T.

I liked it when the author read the part about the two boys trying to cross the river. She made it realistic, for example, about the crocodile spinning the boy round in the water.
Hanif M.

I think her books seem interesting. Also, I think the author is a good inspiration to people.
Maddie P-M.

Crazy, funny, friendly, rude(ish), exciting and inspirational - Beaumont students enjoy meeting Sarah Crossan

Here are some of the things our Year 7 students had to say after Sarah Crossan's recent visit to the school:

Sarah was very engaging and I liked how upbeat and down-to-earth she was towards us. Daisy G.

I will definitely look at poetry in a different light after Sarah's talk. Eliz GK.

It was interesting when Sarah spoke about the research she did for her book 'One'.
Owen J.

Sarah was very respectful and truthful when talking about conjoined twins. Such a treat to have her talk to us. Teyan K.

I liked Sarah's talk as she mixed humour into poetry and gave us plenty of experiences in her life that would interest us. Matti K.

Sarah is really, really funny. Her ideas are so unique and I really want to meet her again.
Mia P.

In my opinion, she was amazing. Mitchell B.

I liked how Sarah changed Romeo and Juliet to people in real life. Peter L.

Sarah really brought out how amazing poetry can be if you try and emphasize and almost do improvisation with it. Issy S.

Really inspirational. Sarah taught us that if there's a goal you want to achieve then you can do it. Maddy W.

Sarah Crossan on poetry - feel it, love it, perform it, slam it!

We celebrated World Book Day in style this week with a visit from writer Sarah Crossan. It was very exciting to welcome Sarah back to Beaumont. Since her last visit, she has been awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for her verse-novel One.

Sarah has written three novels in verse and is a great lover of poetry. She feels that many young people are put off poetry as they grow up and, in an enthralling talk to Year 7, she set about defending poetry and showing students ways to enjoy it again.

Here are some of Sarah's thoughts on poetry and messages she had for our students:
  • Remember how much you loved nursery rhymes and rhyming stories when you were small
  • Poetry belongs to young people
  • Reclaim poetry, don't be afraid of it
  • Start with the heart: think about how a poem makes you feel before you think about what it means
  • Connect with poems emotionally, like you do with songs lyrics
  • When you interpret a poem for yourself, it belongs to you
  • Poetry needs to be performed and read aloud
  • Romeo and Juliet (feat.Harry Styles) - it's all about the luuuurve. Shakespeare's language may be old but the emotions involved are the same as today
  • Verse novels - give them a try. They are less wordy than regular novels, quicker and not so daunting to read!
  • Poetry slams - get creative with language and the spoken word. Perform poetry and compete!
Many thanks to Sarah for an amazing talk, for spending time with students and for signing so many books!

Copies of all Sarah's books, including her verse novels The Weight of Water, One and We Come Apart are available from the school library.
