AR points - Elgar wins the day

Congratulations to forms 7E and 8E for coming top of this term's AR points tables. 7E  topped their league table by a convincing margin, over 1000 AR points, from nearest rivals 7R. It was a much tighter affair in Year 8, with only 107 AR points separating first and second place. All students who scored 60% or above in an AR quiz this term have contributed to their form's points total, so a great team effort by all our readers. The winning forms will each receive a chocolatey reward! We start again from scratch in January so there is all to play for next term.

Fantastic quizzing everyone....and keeeeep reading!

Telling it straight - Isabel H (8N) reviews 'Counting by 7s'

And it’s back! Another Beaumont whole school read! And this year it’s Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan.
Would you enjoy a heart-warming tale about a child's new, yet confusing life?
Do you understand, or want to understand the beauty of the world around you?

Do you have little obsessions in everyday life - such as counting by 7s?

If you can say yes to at least one of these questions, then Counting by 7s is the book for you!

Willow Chance is a genius -there’s no doubt about it. But why can her standard school not see that?

This book is all about Willow trying not to let life get on top of her. Her parents have died, she’s been made to see a counsellor for reasons absurd, she’s living in a garage behind a nail bar and just can’t possibly face school.

This compelling tale has something in it for everyone! There is no doubt you’ll feel Willow’s pain as she struggles through grief but you will also experience rejoiced emotions as things begin to look up.
Not only can you take this book as an enjoyable read. In doing so, you’ll be earning your form house points. And that’s not it! You can then go on to enter plenty of competitions through school related to the book….. There are some excellent prizes up for grabs too!

With five weeks of the term still to go, the Accelerated Reader display board is already completely covered with stars! Stars are awarded to Year 7 and 8 students when they score 100% on an AR book quiz. This term has seen some very accurate quizzing, as you can tell by looking at the board. 'Very inspirational' - Beaumont Book Club meets Tamsyn Murray

Beaumont Year 7 Book Club met writer Tamsyn Murray during her recent visit. Here are some of the questions they asked:

Why did you want to be an author?
Because I loved reading so much I decided I wanted to write my own book, to see if I could do it. I think if you're a good reader you're halfway there.

Did you expect your first book to be published?
I hoped so but wasn't sure. I wrote My So-Called Afterlife in six weeks in 2008. It's about a girl ghost who haunts a boys' toilets in Carnaby Street. I thought  a boys' toilet was the worst place to spend eternity! It was the easiest book I've ever written.

Where do you get the inspiration for your characters?
Partly from me, for example, my sense of humour; also friends and family, everyone I meet really. Cassidy in my Completely Cassidy series is 40% me and 60% my daughter.

After writing funny books, why did you write Instructions for a Second-hand Heart?
My stories just come to me and it was a nice challenge to do something different. It was inspired by a blog post about a mother giving up her son's heart for donation. This book took much longer to write; I did lots of medical research on organ donation and also spoke to the Samaritans. It took two years and lots of crying to do the first draft and four years altogether to write the book. I'm very proud of it.

What do you want your readers to feel when they read the book?
I think I want tears, or I haven't done my job properly. I want readers to live for the characters and feel what they're going through but I also want them to feel uplifted. It's not a book about death but about learning to live. It's a hopeful book so I want readers to smile too.

How did you feel when you wrote the last chapter?
Mixed emotions. I was relieved, because it had taken so long. I found the characters wouldn't leave me alone. The book is important to me.

Will you do a sequel to Instructions for a Second-hand Heart?
No, this is a stand-alone book.

Of all the books you've written, which is your favourite?
That's hard! I think Instructions for a Second-hand Heart because I put so much of myself into it and I love the characters.

Have you met any other authors?
I already know lots of authors, such as Sarah Crossan. I have met JK Rowling, who was lovely! If I could meet authors from the past I would like to meet Jane Austen and Agatha Christie.

What is you favourite Harry Potter book?
The Half-Blood Prince.

What profession would you choose if you weren't a writer?
A singer!

Thank you, Tamsyn, for a look inside the world of a writer!

Discussing affairs of the heart with writer Tamsyn Murray

How do you face up to a future you didn't think you were going to have?

This is the question facing the two main characters in Tamsyn Murray's new young adult novel Instructions For a Second-hand Heart. Tamsyn introduced Year 7 students to the book during her visit to Beaumont last week. At the centre of the story is the issue of organ donation, a subject about which Tamsyn spoke passionately. The book's dual narrators are Niamh, whose family decides to donate her twin brother's heart when he dies in an accident; and Jonny, the boy who receives Leo's heart. The book is about loss and grief, but is equally about family, friendship, hope and learning to live when you are given a second chance at life.

During her talk in the hall, Tamsyn spoke about the inspiration behind the story and about the four years of work, research and tears involved in writing the book. Then, to set the scene for the students, Tamsyn read out a chapter from the book. A palpable sense of tension built in the hall as Tamsyn read on and the tragic events of the chapter unfolded. By the end of the reading, the audience was listening with bated breath and, as Tamsyn reached the final sentence, there were gasps from the students: 'He lies unmoving. I watch red blossom against the grey-black boulder where his head rests. And somewhere, somebody starts to scream'.

Tamsyn's powerful storytelling captured the students, many of whom came to the library immediately after the talk to meet the author and buy a copy of the book. Tamsyn spent a busy break-time signing books, and took the time to talk to students while writing a personal dedication in each copy.

Tamsyn rounded off her visit by meeting members of the Year 7 Book Club, answering their questions and chatting about her work, her life as a writer and her love of reading. A huge thank you to Tamsyn for visiting Beaumont and for sharing her experiences and her amazing new book with us.

Instructions For a Second-hand Heart is available from the Beaumont library, alongside Tamsyn's Complete Cassidy and My So-Called series.

Thrilling and enthralling - scaling the heights with writer Matt Dickinson

Beaumont pupils were treated to a fascinating, first-hand account of an Everest ascent when writer, film-maker, climber and adventurer Matt Dickinson visited us last week. Matt summitted Everest in 1996 and has used his climbing experiences as the inspiration for his series of young adult books The Everest Files.

Addressing Year 7 and 8 students in the hall, Matt promised to take us on an adventure up the deadly North Face of Everest, a trip from which we would 'hopefully come back alive'! Matt describes Everest as 'an alien world where humans don't belong'. His story-telling, breath-taking photos and video footage brought gasps from the audience.

Matt took us deep into this world where the glacial ice 'creaks, grinds, groans and shatters'. He told stories of his journey through 'The Death Zone', of crevasses 300m deep, of crumbling blocks of ice the size of buildings, of fingers frozen as solid as fish fingers and of 250 exploding bars of Toffee Crisp!

We learned some mind-blowing facts: did you know that Mount Everest is still rising, pushing up at the same speed that that our fingernails grow? Or that, at minus 72 degrees Fahrenheit, a hot cup of tea thrown into the air will freeze immediately and disappear into a cloud of frozen particles? Or that over 150 climbers have not made it back down from Mount Everest and remain frozen where they died?

Matt's enthusiasm for climbing and travel is inspiring. He is heading back to Everest next year to attempt an ascent via the South Face. Matt encouraged our students to 'think adventurously' in life and also to 'think of books in a positive way'. After all,it was by reading a book on mountaineering as a boy that Matt first got hooked on the idea of climbing...and look where that has taken him.

Matt Dickinson's books are exciting, fast-paced, full-of-action thrillers. A wide selection are available from the Beaumont library, including Matt's latest book Lie Kill Walk Away.

Introducing our new 'Beaumont Reads' book - the fantastic 'Counting by 7s'

'If you're lost, you might need to swim against the tide.'

Last week we launched Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan as our latest whole school read. Following assemblies in which Mrs Lennox-Hennessy and Miss Hosegood introduced the book, the library was inundated with students asking to borrow a copy. We have now issued over FIFTY copies of the book, including ones in French and German.

Here are some of the ways students can get involved in 'Beaumont Reads':

  • Read the wonderful Counting by 7s
  • Write a review of the book and receive a specially-designed button badge
  • Design a poster or bookmark inspired by the book
  • Enter our BOOK TRAILER competition and use your IT skills to create your own trailer to promote Counting by 7s and inspire others to pick up and read the book
  • The winner of this competition will win a Kindle Fire!

The library team are putting together all the competition details, links to book trailer websites and advice on how to upload your book trailers. We will publish this on our blog and on a display in the library in the coming days.

If you have any questions, do come along to the library and ask. Take the plunge, read Counting by 7s and become part of this year's fantastic Beaumont Reads adventure!

Poems inspired by a room of Treasures

Here are the two poems written by the Book Club students during their Write Here! workshop at the British Library this week. During the session, the students each wrote a piece of creative writing taking, as inspiration, the Sir John Riblat Treasures room and the Library's 3D optical illusion painting Paradoxymoron (a mind-blowing experience in its own right!). The students each chose their favourite line from their written piece and then put these lines together to produce the poems. We think you'll agree that they have come together beautifully.

Leaving the Darkness

I don't have dreams simply because my mind can't comprehend
the gorgeous fantasies of night,
My mind is dominated by silence,
My hand touches the knife,
The only thing that is stopping me is my stained reputation,
The intricate sound of insects and crickets with the occasional sound of birds singing,
The contrast of silence and noise.

Blood Flows

I am in the land where fire shoots and thrives and water doesn't flow,
Blood splattering and swords crashing,
I am worried for my father, and I dream of my mother,
I want people to care for each other and show love for each other.
The world I live in is a dark place,
I fear running out of time to make my mark on the world.

By Helena Baird, Maheen Rehan, Rachel Thompson, Will Benson, Fionnuala Cassidy, Tom Flury, Fiona Mason, Jasmine Udomjit and Etienne Yntema.

Making poetry at the British Library

As a reward for their commitment to shadowing the Carnegie shortlist, eleven Beaumont Book Club students enjoyed a literary day out in London this week. Accompanied by Mrs Mayer-Khan and Mrs Shepard, the Year 7 and Year 8 students spent a happy day exploring the British Library and taking part in a creative writing workshop.

To inspire the group, Jenneba, a professional writer and Library guide, took the students into the Sir John Riblat Treasures room. This gallery contains over 200 fascinating books and documents, including Leonardo da Vinci's notebook, the Magna Carta and hand-written lyrics by the Beatles.

We then attended a 'Write Here!' workshop. Using the Treasures room exhibits as their inspiration, and guided by some fantastic activities and literary advice from Jenneba, the students each created their own piece of creative writing. This work focussed on the structure needed in a narrative and will form the framework of a short story or a novella.

To end the session, the group put their work and ideas together to create two collaborative poems which the students then performed. The poems, entitled Leaving the Darkness and Blood Flows, are both highly creative and are testament to the students' commitment to the workshop and to their appreciation of Jenneba's advice and input.

After lunch the students were given time to wander and discover the Library themselves. Here are just some of the mind-blowing facts we learned on our fantastic day at the British Library:

The British Library has over 190 million items, including manuscripts, books, drawings and music scores.

The Library receives a copy of EVERY publication produced in the UK and Ireland.

The Library basements, where items are housed, extend to a depth of over 24 metres.

Books travel from the basements to the reading rooms on a series of conveyor belts hidden inside the Library's walls!

Lies We Tell Ourselves - 'A piercing look at the courage it takes to endure...forms of extreme hatred, violence, racism and sexism.'

This year, for the first time, CILIP (the leading body for libraries and information professionals) joined forces with Amnesty International UK to present the Amnesty CILIP Honour. This book prize is to be awarded to an author whose book 'illuminates, communicates, or celebrates our personal rights and freedoms.'

On Monday 20th June, the inaugural Amnesty CILIP Honour was awarded to Robin Talley for her young adult novel  Lies We Tell Ourselves.

Talley's novel is based on the real-life experiences of The Norfolk 17, a group of African-American teenagers who were the first black students to be integrated into previously all-white schools in Virginia in 1959.

The book portrays the kind of physical and emotional abuse these students endured as they bravely led the fight for an equal education in the face of violent and hate-filled campaigns from anti-integrationists.

Through the friendship of the two main characters, Sarah and Linda, Talley also shines a light on inter-racial relationships and LGBT issues.

Lies We Tell Ourselves is a compelling, thought-provoking and enlightening book. It will be of particular interest to our Year 10 history students who are currently studying this area of the American civil rights movement.

For more information on the history behind Lies We Tell Ourselves and The Norfolk 17, visit Robin Talley's blog:

The archives of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper also give a fascinating insight into the students' civil rights struggles:
