Andy Mulligan

On Monday 19th October critically renowned author Andy Mulligan visited Beaumont School to talk to year 8 students as well as to year 6 students from Cunningham Hill Primary School and Oakwood Primary School.

Andy won numerous awards for his novels and is best known for writing the novel  Trash that was shortlisted for the Carnegie Award, published in twenty two languages and made into a Bafta nominated film. The writing of Trash was inspired by his own experiences of working with young people in places such as Brazil, India and the Philippines.

Year 8 students comment about the visit:

"I thought that he was very entertaining and drew the audience in very well. I also liked the fact that his books were about his life experiences."
Felix Hoare 8A

"It was amazing to meet the author of the incredibly funny Ribblestrop series. It was very interesting talking to him and he embraced the question session in the library that was organised before his speech in the hall."
Charlie Bolam 8S

"The author was very clear and caught everyones attention. He stopped every so  often to ask for questions. I liked the story about the girl that had burned down her school and inspired Andy to create the character Millie in his Ribblestrop series."
Charlotte Harding 8A

"It was really fascinating and exciting to hear about the book idea for "Trash". He     talked about being a teacher in Manila and how he found his ideas in everyday life."

Beaumont Reads Apple and Rain

September saw the launch of our first Whole School Read at Beaumont School and I am delighted to say that the response has been truly great!
The school has become a huge book club reading Apple and Rain and reviews that come in are being displayed on our Beaumont Reads board just outside reception. Mr. Smith, Head of Maths has written:
“We all want to belong socially and be liked. Apple’s desire to fit in with everybody’s expectations of her and the pain that this causes, is a condition that everybody undergoes whether adult or child or in between. This book is an excellent reminder that we should be true to our own nature.”
Anyone who submits a review is entitled to wear a badge, and students and members of staff are proudly wearing their apple badges!  We would love to see parents wearing them out and about in St. Albans too.

Please email your reviews to the librarian
Karin.Mayer-Khan@beaumont.herts.sch.uk
or tweet your comments to @Beau Library using #Beaumont Reads.

We hope you will enjoy reading Apple and Rain too!

Oakwood Book Club is back

On their first visit last Wednesday ten year six readers from Oakwood School received their goody bags and we agreed to read "The fastest boy in the world" by Elizabeth Laird.

Jonathan Stroud

9th October 2015: Year 7 students enjoyed an amazing talk from author Jonathan Stroud. He held his audience captive as he discussed his new Lockwood & Co series where all nature of ghosts, haunts and spirits take over London.
Katie Penn and Jasmine Heron tell us about the event:
“Not only is the author an amazing writer, but also incredibly funny. When he read out a page from “The Screaming Staircase”, he did it with such expression that it immediately drew me in. He knew just how to keep our concentration.” (Katie)
“The author visit was an inspirational experience for me and everyone in year seven! It was amazing to talk to a real author! I have never read ghost stories before, but now I am reading the first book in the Lockwood series and so far it’s brilliant.” (Jasmine)
