Red House Book Award 2013

The shortlist for the 2013 Children's Red House Book Award has been published.  Each year children all over the country read and review hundreds of books, and the top 50 of these are the Pick of the Year.

The Top Ten make up the 2013 shortlist but the other 40 books are favourites too and come highly recommended.

The three titles for the older readers catagory are:

The Medusa Project: Hit Squad by Sophie McKenzie

Simon & Schuster Children's Books ISBN 9780857070715

Hit Squad (The Medusa Project)

The sixth and final book in the series about teenagers with psychic abilities. The Medusa Project team is due to be disbanded and the teenagers sent to separate locations. But Nico, Ketty, Ed and Dylan are determined to investigate claims that a drug with the same powers as the Medusa gene has been developed. A page-turning thriller.

Award-winning Sophie McKenzie seems to have a knack for knowing exactly how to write pitch-perfect pre-teen and teen novels. Yet again she’s created a gripping read for her thousands of fans.

The Lorien Legacies: The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore

Penguin Books ISBN 9780141330877

The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies)

With his exciting, yet simple writing style and vividly imagined alien world, Pittacus Lore has created the ideal series to entice readers to branch out from the realms of Harry Potter. This book follows the fate of the survivors from an alien planet who are being tracked down and destroyed by evil Mogadorians, and combines clever twists with a thrilling, unforgettable chase.

Written in alternating perspectives, the author has packed in adrenaline-pumping action and a love triangle that will suck you in and leave you desperate for the next instalment in the series.

Eight Keys by Suzanne Lafleur

Matt Dickinson

Today Year 8 students were kept enthralled by the author and film-maker Matt Dickinson.  In 1996, along with Alan Hinkes, he made a successful ascent of Mount Everest. Students were given an insight into all that is involved in making such a climb.

He became the first British film-maker to film on the summit and return alive, and his film called Summit Fever has now been seen by more than twenty million people worldwide. It is acclaimed as a compelling story of human triumph and disaster.  "The Death Zone" is his written account of the expedition and is available from the Library for you to read.

Matt Dickinson has also written a new adventure series Mortal Chaos.

The CILIP Carnegie Medal

 Welcome to the Diary page

An historic moment in children's literature as Patrick Ness A Monster Calls wins the 2012 CILIP Carnegie Medal and has also won the Kate Greenaway Medal with Jim Kay taking the prize for his illustrations for A Monster Calls.

The Carnegie medal, which is chosen by librarians, has been running since 1937. A Monster Calls was written by Ness from a set of notes left behind by the Carnegie-medal winning Siobhan Dowd before she died of cancer in 2007. "I felt like I'd been handed a baton and told to run with it," said Ness. "It was a small start, not much, but what was there was potent, and suggested to me where I would take the story."

Those who are taking part in the Olympic Reading Challenge have only four weeks left before the end of the competition on Friday 13th July. Tell the library staff about the books you have read and make sure your entry form is up to date.
